A Cheeseburger and a Side Order of Veggies

Bush caved to the Freedom Fry industry and gave them classification as fresh vegetables:

" The USDA quietly changed the regulations last year at the behest of the french fry industry, which has spent the past five decades pushing for a revision to the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA). The law was passed by Congress in 1930 to protect fruit and vegetable farmers in the event that their customers went out of business without paying for their produce.

The Frozen Potato Products Institute appealed to the USDA in 2000 to change its definition of fresh produce under PACA to include batter-coated, frozen french fries, arguing that rolling potato slices in a starch coating, frying them and freezing them is the equivalent of waxing a cucumber or sweetening a strawberry."

Yup. Rolling starch in starch and frying and freezing is what fresh vegetables are all about. Be sure to get your recommended daily allowance...

Are Italians Fascist?

The BBC reports that a whopping 73% of Italy's citizens cast their ballots in the recent EU elections and that the loser was the party of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the right-wing media magnate.

Anchor deals Berlusconi nasty blow

"He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword", says an ancient proverb - and it appears to have come true in modern Italy.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the man who controls over 90% of Italian television, has received one of the most humiliating beatings of his political career by a disgruntled TV anchorwoman.

Lilli Gruber, Italy's most famous newsreader who ran for the Olive Tree opposition coalition, got more than 236,000 votes - roughly twice as many as the premier in the capital, Rome.

Ms Gruber, also known as "Lilli the Red" after her flame-red mane, heads a new breed of fierce opponents of the premier who have defected - or have been banished from - that very broadcasting world which is largely controlled by the media-magnate-turned-premier.

A hugely popular and well-respected journalist who acted as a correspondent from Baghdad during the war, she has infused fresh blood into the Olive Tree opposition coalition.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3810439.stm

Final tally: Olive Tree opposition: 31% of the votes
Prime Minister's Forza Italia: 21%

The answer to whether Italians are fascist seems "clearly not the majority".

Terrorism Way Up; Not Down As Reported

Powell tells us that the matter of a report saying terrorism has gone down when it actaully increased 20% is bad:

'It's a numbers error. It's not a political judgment that said, 'Let's see if we can cook the books.' We can't get away with that now. Nobody was out to cook the books. Errors crept in,' he told ABC's 'This Week.'"

This, of course, means that the glorious days of being able to do just that are over. No more getting away with cooking the books. We used to be able to get away with that all the time. Any day. Did you see that presentation to the UN Powell gave? Can't do that anymore.
