Rich Guys Sell Their Friends

The NYTimes tells us about a rich guy, a lobbyist facing - you guessed it - criminal charges, who charges people to see his friends. Friends like the President of the United States:
"The lobbyist Jack Abramoff asked for $9 million in 2003 from the president of a West African nation to arrange a meeting with President Bush and directed his fees to a Maryland company now under federal scrutiny, according to newly disclosed documents."

Well, the plan must have been thwarted. It can't be that $9 million gets you a meeting with the president, right?

"The African leader, President Omar Bongo of Gabon, met with President Bush in the Oval Office on May 26, 2004, 10 months after Mr. Abramoff made the offer."

$9 million for a PR photo op with the President, helping your little country get around the criticisms of human rights abuses.

Rich people are wonderful. Don't you want to be just like them?
